About

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a not-for-profit educational and service organization that empowers women to succeed and advance in the field of engineering, and to be recognized for their life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders.  Founded in 1950, SWE is the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career for women through an exciting array of training and development programs, networking opportunities, scholarships, outreach and advocacy activities, and much more.

The San Diego Section (SWE-SD) was chartered in 1982 and is now one of the largest SWE sections in the country.  SWE-SD works hard to make sure our 166 members’ SWE calendars are always full of diverse activities.  We offer robust programs throughout the year and provide the community with a better understanding of women in engineering.  During Fiscal Year 11 we supported the community through $8,000 in scholarships, participated in the county’s largest science and engineering fair, and reached out to over 500 K-12 girls.  SWE San Diego applied for and was awarded three Program Development Grants from the National SWE Committee.  We are proud to say these grants helped make our outreach endeavors possible, and we were recognized by SWE’s Region B with an award for our SWEET event.  In addition to community outreach, we also provided guidance to our members during social and professional development programs.  We held one membership event a month.  These events ranged from  presentations and technical tours to book clubs and golf outings.
