Kelly’s SWE journey began in Atlanta, Georgia where she was actively involved on the board in the collegiate and professional SWE sections. Since moving to San Diego, Kelly has been involved with the Outreach Committee and the Professional Development Committee prior to becoming President of the section. Within Becton Dickinson (BD), a global medical technology company, Kelly is currently a Senior R&D Engineer leading global teams on the design, development, and launch of new gravity infusion intravenous therapy sets. Kelly holds a mechanical engineering bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Additionally, she is the Secretary for the local Ultimate Frisbee organization and spends the remainder of her free time training for marathons.

As a young woman in Iran, the aerospace industry was off limits to her since it was open only to men. To pursue her passion, Jahansouz immigrated to the United States, completing both her MS and PhD with honors at the University of California, Riverside. Jahansouz has pursued a career in the industry while completing her degrees, raising a family, and helping many young women get started in the engineering field. Jahansouz is an active member of the Air Force Reserve in the fields of avionics and systems. Jahansouz has led a number of initiatives to support the progress of women in engineering. A SWE member since 2013, Jahansouz helps professional and academic development organizations support women in achieving their full potential in careers as engineers and leaders. Star Jahansouz has led an exemplary life as engineer, researcher, and community organizer as well as wife and mother. She is a role model for many girls in the STEM fields and an important advocate for inclusion and innovation in engineering.

Originally from Ypsilanti, MI and a recent graduate of Michigan Technological University, Erin is new to San Diego. Having just entered the professional realm and started her first job out of college as a Human Factors Engineer within the last year, she has just begun to grow her professional network and community. SWE was the first place she looked after her positive experiences as a member of Michigan Technological University’s local chapter. Her unique background in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Cognitive Science and Human Factors allows her to draw on multiple disciplines to find intuitive solutions to any problem she’s faced with. Her engineering background taught her to problem solve and the psychology piece reminds her to design with the user in mind.

As a recent transplant to the Southern California region, Nina come to this section with a breath of leadership experience. Not only does she serve SWE-SD as Corresponding Secretary but she also serves as a community manager of an online professional development community with over 40,000 members nationwide. She proud to promote an inclusive community that not only encourages others to grow. As an Industrial and Systems Engineering graduate from the University of Michigan Dearborn, Nina is well versed in project management, process implementation and standardization; she brings her experience as a business consultant to her SWE role with her familiarity with platforms such as Zoom, Eventbrite, and Google Teams to ensure that SWE-SD programming to accessible to as many people as possible.

Kirsten Petersen joined the Society of Women Engineers in her freshman year at Santa Clara University after attending the FY11 Region A Conference in Stockton, CA. That conference piqued her interest, cementing SWE by her side to continually support a passion for engineering while completing her Bachelors and Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering at Santa Clara University and now as an engineer at San Diego Gas & Electric, Co working on system protection, battery energy storage systems, and wildfire mitigation. Throughout her time in the Santa Clara University Section, Kirsten took on increasingly challenging leadership roles at the section level – Secretary, Vice President, and President – as well as at the region level – Alternate Collegiate Senator, Mega Issues Subcommittee member, and the Liaison for Collegiate Leadership Summits. Kirsten is enthusiastic about this opportunity for both personal growth and contribution to the Society. She will contribute new ideas for allocate funds among committees for the year’s programs, providing access to budget updates, planning scholarships, and increasing methods for reimbursement.
