Dear SWE San Diego,
It is my privilege to continue serving as your local section president a second term. Last year, we had a robust second half of FY18 and hope to continue that momentum into FY19 start!
While most everyone remembers the Royal wedding on May 19th, SWE-SD celebrated on the same date with 75 attendees at our SWE-SD Annual Banquet at Admiral Baker. This year, SWE-SD awarded six Science Fair winners from the Junior and High School divisions, five incoming collegiate scholarships winners, and our SWE-SD Outstanding Engineer (Christina Macatee from Solar Turbines)! I’d also like to recognize our Banquet Chair, Denise Tung, and her hardworking planning team: Charlotte Fitzgerald, Judy Hsia, Jackie Tran, Liz Wong, Nichole Mayer, Laura Hershberger (Awards chair), Joan Fisher (Scholarship Chair), and Laura Meldrum (Science Fair Chair). Special thanks to Susie Kirkland, banquet Master of Ceremony; and Michele Chin-Purcell, banquet speaker, for delivering a powerful keynote on “Reflections on the Power of Women Engineers”; and of course, to our wonderful and amazing volunteers for the numerous hours they’ve dedicated to supporting SWE and the greater San Diego community.
In FY18, SWE-SD raised over $20,000 in funds ($11,850 in scholarships, $4,000 in K-12 outreach). We would like to express our appreciation to our new and continuing SWE-SD sponsors! We could not have successful SWE-SD programs and scholarships without such generous donations.
I’d like to thank our FY18 SWE-SD leadership team and highlight several accomplishments from the past year! SWE-SD’s 13th annual SWE Exploring Technology (SWEET) outreach program was held on April 28th on USD campus, with 95 participants and 41 volunteers for the single-day event including Girl Workshops (for grades 6-12) and Parent & Educator Program (PEP). We are happy to share that SWEET won the 2018 Sonora Region award for Outstanding Program at WELocal Conference in Phoenix! SWE-SD’s K-12 Outreach Committee hosted Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day at Raytheon and led Women in Engineering Day at Rosa Parks Elementary; and participated in local community STEM outreach such as the Engineering Festival at the Fleet Science Center, STEM Day at Dana Middle School in Point Loma, Expo Day and the Science Fair. In addition, SWE-SD also continued our robust Professional Development program including two Workshops (Resume Building at NuVasive, and Women’s Financial Planning by Nichole Mayer), Speaker/Coach (Cynthia Burnham, author), Executive Speaker (Christina Amorim, VP, Thermo Fisher Scientific), three Technical Tours (Illumina, NuVasive, and General Atomics), three speaker panels (joint with San Diego Women in Biotech), and two Wine & Webinar events (one joint with Solar Women Engineers ERG). Our Member Services Committee presented our inaugural Leadership Summit (in fall and spring), Coffee Chats (monthly Saturday mornings), a 5K St. Patrick’s Day run in Carlsbad, and a host of networking lunches and happy hour gatherings!
With FY18 wrapped up, I would like to welcome our SWE-SD Executive Council for FY19! I'm excited to work with these ladies and their committees in the coming year.
President: Liz Wong
Vice President: Shawnnah Castillo
Treasurer: Joan Fisher
Secretary: Jackie Tran
In addition, we also have several local section members serving across the Society in FY19! Natalie Vanderspiegel is serving as SWE Director. Joan Fisher, Susie Kirkland, and Evelyn Fairman are on the Leadership Coaching Committee. Debra Kimberling is the Educator Chair on the K-12 Outreach Committee.
We are starting to fill the calendar with meetings to kick start the planning for FY19. We are looking for your input to help shape and drive SWE SD’s goals for this year! We would really appreciate if you would fill out our Member Feedback Survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2C2X6NM. Or if you have an idea for a STEM outreach activity or have a favorite eatery to meet up for lunch/HH with your SWE-sters or have an idea for a speaker topic or technical tour, contact us at swe.sandiego@gmail.com! More details will be shared online throughout the year at swesandiego.org.
Also, with FY19 just getting started, this is a great time to make sure your swe.org profile is up-to-date and that you’ve renewed your SWE membership! You can login at the top right of the main swe.org website to update your SWE member info with current section, school, work, address, phone, interests, communication preferences, etc. Membership in SWE has a ton of benefits including access to a strong community and network of women engineers, and resources for education and professional development. Feel free to reach out to the Executive Council at swe.sandiego@gmail.com, or directly to SWE HQ at membership@swe.org with questions on renewal.
I look forward to seeing you soon at the FY19 Open House on August 23rd!
Sincerely,
Liz Wong
