Visibility in the Workplace
Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Cristina first put her chemical and environmental engineering degrees to work at pharmaceutical companies, managing the regulatory aspects of environmental health and safety.
Since August 2014, she has been the Vice President for EHS and Sustainability of the Life Sciences Solutions Group at Thermo Fisher Scientific, a company that enables its customers to make the work healthier, cleaner and safer.
Cristina was formerly Chief Sustainability Officer of Life Technologies, a biotechnology company on the leading edge of environmental, social, and corporate governance performance. Acquired in January 2014, Life Technologies is now a Thermo Fisher Scientific brand.
Since 2004, Cristina spearheaded a Life Technologies team to successfully execute sustainability-inspired growth strategies based on design-for-environment and green chemistry principles. Cristina and her team exceeded compliance standards, taking a holistic approach by considering the full life cycle of Life Technologies’ products, packaging, services and processes, to create tangible, long-term value for the company and its stakeholders.
Noteworthy initiatives include fostering new partnerships in the value chain; transitioning the company from a linear (take-make-waste) to a closed-loop business model; and introducing innovative concepts such as zero waste, low-carbon delivery, reverse logistics, and product take-back for reuse, recycling, and refurbishment. These measures have increased revenue and improved profitability, created goodwill in the marketplace and garnered recognition for the company.
Cristina was named Sustainability Executive of the Year at the Ethical Corporation's annual Responsible Business Forum awards ceremony in 2012, in recognition of her strategic role in Life Technologies' emergence as a Corporate Sustainability leader.
