Officer Position Descriptions

SWE President

The San Diego SWE President is the head of our Section. The duties and responsibilities include

  • Represent the Section before the public
  • Preside over all meetings of the section and the Board of Directors
  • Appoint chairs for committees
  • Coordinate activities and execute business of the section between meetings
  • Serve as contact point for section business and inquiries
  • Check signing authority for section business (along with Treasurer)
  • Maintain the current official membership records of the Section (official rosters from SWE headquarters)

 

SWE Vice President

San Diego SWE's Vice President is the President's right hand woman. Her duties and responsibilities include

  • Serve as a liaison between the Board of Directors and the general membership
  • Attend Board of Directors meeting once a month
  • Introduce new members to the section
  • Follow up with non-members (attending SWE-SD programs) and drop-out members
  • Serve as a liaison between the Section and the local college Sections
  • Put in place outreach programs for schools

 

SWE Secretary

The duties and responsibilities of the San Diego SWE Secretary include the following:

  • Checking the SWE mailbox and forwarding mail to the other Board members
  • Attend Board of Directors meeting once a month
  • Prepare the Board of Directors meeting minutes and distribute to Board
  • Maintain SWE calendar
  • Help with maintaining RSVP list for the annual banquet

 

SWE Treasurer

The SWE San Diego Treasurer is responsible for keeping the finances of our section on track, which includes

  • Collection, safekeeping, and distribution of all Section funds
  • Attend Board of Directors meeting once a month
  • Sign checks for the Section as authorized by the President or any such officers designated by the Board of Directors as authorized to sign them
  • Prepare, maintain, and report, as directed, the financial position of the Section relative to the approved budget
  • Keep an exact account of all receipts and expenditures for submission to the Society Treasurer and the end of each fiscal year
  • Prepare a budget for the coming fiscal year which shall be submitted for approval to the Board of Directors

 

SWE Section Representative (2)

Two Positions.

The San Diego SWE Section Representative represent San Diego SWE at the Regional and Society level. The duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Act as the official contact between the Society Board of Directors and the Section
  • Vote on behalf of the Section on all mattes before the Council of Section Representatives
  • When possible, assure that she/he (they) or authorized alternate(s) represent(s) the Section at the annual meeting of the Council of Section Representatives
  • When possible, assure that she/he (they) or authorized alternate(s) represent(s) the Section at all Region meetings
  • Prepare and submit reports of Section activities as requested by the Society Board of Directors
  • Prepare and submit reports of Section activities as requested by the Director of the Region
  • Report to the Section on matters reported in the minutes of the Society Board of Directors, Council of Section Representatives and Membership meetings
  • Report to the Section on matters reported in the minutes of any Region meetings

 

Collegiate Chair

Coordinates with the collegiate sections (SDSU, UCSD, USD, and Southwestern College) in San Diego all year long to keep up the communication between the professional and collegiate sections. The time commitment is approx 1-3 hours per month. Responsibilities include:

  • Communicating the professional events with the students
  • Communicating student events or support needed with the professional section
  • Attending a few of the collegiate meetings or events

 

Historian/Photography Chair

The time commitment required is about 2 hours per month. Responsiblies include:

Membership Chair

The time commitment required is about 2 hours per month. The responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the VP and President in setting up technical and professional programs for the members
  • Survey Section Members for new activities and interest level in current activities
  • Monitoring membership and keep track of any new members that come into our section

 

Nominations Chair

The position is only needed towards the end of the fiscal year (Mar-June). The time commitment required is approx 1-2 hours per month. Responsibilities include:

  • Soliciting nominations for next years Board of Director’s (BOD)
  • Setup and conduct electronic voting
  • Submit results to VP to announce to the section

Note: Cannot run for a BOD position for the next year

 

Banquet Chair

The high-visibility position is held from February to May, when the annual banquet is held. The time commitment required is about eight hours per month. Responsibilities include

  • preparing invitations by April
  • creating the program booklet by early May
  • organizing and delegating banquet activities
  • attending the banquet

The Chair will work with President for the Agenda, scholarship committee on recipients, science fair chair for science fair awards, members chair for plaques and corporate recognition.

 

Website Chair

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining the SWE-SD website
  • Updating the site with information regarding past events, future events, or other information provided by the BOD

Note: Must have a basic knowledge of maintaining, creating, and modifying a website using html or be willing to learn!

 

Scholarships Chair

Responsibilities include

  • publicity of scholarships to local schools
  • working with school contacts to coordinate application distribution
  • coordinate the accepting and reviewing applications with a few other committee members
Scholarship Program Goals
Every year the San Diego County Section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) awards monetary scholarships to young women enrolling in engineering schools or university engineering programs leading to a first degree in engineering. Each year the number and amount of our scholarships varies, depending on our corporate and member support.

 

Outreach Programs Chair

Responsibilities include organizing with committee SWE San Diego outreach events which include:

  • SWEET with the Girl Scouts
  • Poway Girls Engineering Day
  • Race for the Cure
  • Adopt a Family
  • San Diego Science Expo
  • San Diego Science Fair
  • Engineer's Week - Hands on activies at local schools

 

Outreach Program Goals
SWE San Diego is committed to working with students at all levels to promote awareness of engineering and to help develop underlying skills in math and science. By working together with professional engineers in these outreach programs, girls and young women get a better idea of what engineering is really all about and what they need to succeed if they choose to pursue an engineering career of their own. SWE San Diego is also committed to giving back to the community through active participation by the members.

 

Outreach - SWEET Program Chairs (2)

Two Positions held as Co-Chairs. The time commitment required is about 8 hours per month. Responsibilities include:

  • Organizing, with committee, SWE-SD’s largest outreach event in coordination with the Girl Scouts.
  • Facilitating Bi-weekly coordination meetings starting at the end of January through the event in April.
  • Coordinating day -of volunteers
  • Attending Event (April 24, 2010)

 

Outreach - SD Science Expo Program Chair

Coordinates SWE San Diego participation in the San Diego Science Expo. The time commitment required is about 4 hours per month. Responsibilities include:

  • Organizing SWE San Diego’s hands-on booth for SD Science Expo Day held in Petco Park (March 27, 2010)
  • Attending Event
