Laura Meldrum, Science Fair Chair
This year our judges were Sandy Bennett, Joan Fisher, Lois Fong-Sakai, Vanita Murthy, Liz Wong, Sandi Wong-McKellips, and myself. Together we evaluated about 60 projects. Thanks to the judges for taking time from their work day to select those most deserving of a SWE Award.
For the fourth year in a row Anna Simpson, a Junior at Patrick Henry High, is receiving a SWE-SD award. This time her project, "A Mobile Autonomous Chemical Detecting Robot" has earned her our Senior Division First Place Award and $170 from us. Anna received a general Science Fair First Place award in the Engineering - Electrical and Mechanical category. In addition she is being honored by the U.S. Navy, the San Diego Space Society, and the San Diego ACLU. And, she is receiving a FGM, Inc. Award, an ATK Excellence in Physical Science Award, and a Senior INTEL ISEF Trip Sweepstakes Award.
Our Senior Division Second Place Award is going to Brittney Nguyen, a Junior at High Tech High School for her exhibit entitled “Conservation Forensics: Improving the safety and efficacy of DNA extraction”. Brittney won a general Science Fair Second Place in Biochemistry and was also honored by the Zoological Society of San Diego and the Association for Women in Science. She is receiving $130 from SWE-SD.
Two SWE-SD awards are also being given in the Junior Division.
Kristen Mizutani, an 8th Grader at The Rhoades School, received a general Science Fair First Place in Physics & Astronomy for “Car Window Tinting: Impacts on UV Penetration”. From SWE-SD she is receiving our Junior Division First Place Award.
Our Junior Division Second Place Award is going to Melanie Fougeres, an 8th grader at Marshall Middle. Melanie received a Science Fair First Place in Engineering - Materials and Bioengineering for her project, "Dam-It with Burlap Bags."
Ms. Mizutani and Ms. Fougeres are each receiving $100 from SWE-SD.
Judging Science Fair projects is a lot of fun but it’s also hectic and it means taking time away from work, so “Thank you again judges.”
