Overview
The Society of Women Engineers Exploring Technology (SWEET) annual spring event is a great opportunity to give back to the community and to encourage our future women engineers.
SWEET provides an exciting opportunity for middle and high school girls (grades 6 – 12) to learn about science and technology careers. The day-long workshop features five exciting science-based activities where the girls will learn to think like an engineer in a hands-on environment.
While the girls are actively engaged in the SWEET, their adult influencers are given the opportunity to attend a parallel program, called the SWEET Parent and Educators Program (PEP). This is an educational program for Parents and Educators that will help sustain the girls’ STEM interests long after the activity day is over. [Participant Info / Tickets]
Volunteers may sign up to help out on just the day of the event, or get more involved as a planning committee member (see below).

HIGH SCHOOL OR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS ROLE MODELS:
PARENT AND EDUCATOR PROGRAM (PEP)
- (10:00am-12:00pm) Set Up Shift: Assist with getting things from parking lot to event rooms. Carrying boxes may be required. Set up pop up canopies and tables for registration.
- (11:30am-1:00pm) Registration: Welcome SWEET participants (students and parent/educator attendees) and volunteers. Check in our volunteers so they know what their assignment is and where to go. Assist with participant registration to ensure attendees move through lines smoothly. Help guide and provide directions to students and parents/educators.
- (4:00pm-5:30pm) Tear Down, Cleanup: Clean up of SWEET all-day program. Break down canopys and folding tables. Pack leftover materials and help move boxes to parking lot.
HIGH SCHOOL OR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS ROLE MODELS:
- (10:30am-5:00pm) Activity Leader: Volunteers for this shift should contact Jackie Tran at outreach.swesandiego@gmail.com, and preferably join the SWEET planning committee. As an activity leader, your role is to develop and lead a hands-on design project for girls to learn engineering concepts. You will also introduce an inventor or engineering pioneer that ties to the discipline or application for the activity. You will have several helpers in the room, plus other group leader volunteers, for each of the student group rotations. There will be an afternoon snack provided, or you may opt to bring your own.
- (11:00am-5:00pm) Activity Helpers: Work in the activity room with the girls to guide them through the hands-on activity. Work with the Activity Leader to guide them through the design process, and answer questions.
- (11:45am-5:00pm) Group Leader: Volunteers for this shift should be comfortable talking with students in small groups. Manage a group of 8-10 girls during the event. Talk with them about your experience as an engineer and what you love about your job (or your major) and why you got interested in engineering. Maintain accountability for the students in your group (trips to the bathroom, safety/first aid).
PARENT AND EDUCATOR PROGRAM (PEP)
- (12:30pm-5:00pm) PEP Activity Helper: Work with a PEP Lead to help parents during the hands-on activity, distribute and collect assessment surveys, and any other general room help. May also assist the panelists and speaker, as needed.
