March Professional Speaker Event
SPANNING GENERATIONS
EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT, COMMUNICATION, & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Description: In today’s organizations we encounter four generations of workers: Gen X, Society of the Serpent, Baby Boomer, and Traditional. The diversity represented by each unique group can make an issue of communication, collaboration, and motivation. As the generations continue to shift it will be essential for successful organizations to share and transfer knowledge between generations. We must first recognize the characteristics and values that are representative of each group. During this session, the speaker will discuss differences in work ethics, leadership styles, work-life balance, and views on education, money, and much more. Participants will also assess which generation they fit into, and discover it might not even be the generation they were born into.
Speaker: Susie Kirkland is a 15 year SWE member and an alumni of San Diego State University. She has served on SWE's Collegiate Leadership Coaching Committee since 2006 and is now part of the Leadership Coaching Committee. Susie was a recipient of SWE's FY16 Distinguished New Engineer Award. When not working or volunteering, she enjoys spending beautiful San Diego days with her husband and daughter.

STEP Up
The Service Through Engineering Program (STEP Up) engages young women in high school in exploring the ways that engineers can use their skills in the service of others. Teams of High School girls, mentored by SWE-SD professionals, learn about the engineering process as they design and build projects for children with special needs. Our collaborators include Rady Children’s Hospital, Girl Scouts San Diego, the Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering program (BE WiSE), and local high schools.
This program consists of 5 weekend sessions spanning 3 months in the fall. Mentors willing to guide the design process are needed to support teams of 3-5 girls. No special technical skills are required. Subject Matter Experts (SME), or those willing to be trained as a SME are also needed to support specific design and build sessions.
Dates: 10/4, 10/18, 11/1, 11/15, and 12/6
Time: 11:45am-5pm
Location: Fab Lab (downtown San Diego). First and Last session: Solar Turbines (2200 Pacific Hwy)
*Note*: The 2015 program is in progress. If interested in jumping in to help out, please e-mail outreach@swesandiego.org with availability.
